Most Pleco species are native to the slow-moving tropical rivers of South America, although can sometimes be found in Panama and Costa Rican waters too. Whilst Plecos can occupy a wide range of habitats, most have very limited ranges and will only inhabit certain parts of specific rivers. Plecos are bottom feeders and can be a great addition to an aquarium due to their natural instinct to scavenge, clearing up uneaten food and matter that could otherwise cause unstable water parameters.
Key information: Plecos will live happily in a community tank and are compatible with most aquarium fish. There should be slightly more males than females due to territorial aggression during breeding season (we recommend at least 1 to 2 females per male). Plecos are highly adaptable, with the ideal water temperature being anywhere between 22-30°C. Plecos are not fussy eaters and will consume almost any food provided, although should also be offered foods including algae wafers, bloodworms, and vegetables (they have been known to particularly enjoy cucumber, spinach, and mushrooms!). Plecos generally take 2-5 years to become full size and can live anywhere between 10-15 years. The adult size of a pleco can vary greatly depending on species, so please see estimated size next to each in the list below.
