Neon Tetras originate from the blackwater and clearwater streams in the South American Amazon basin. They are relatively hardy, peaceful, and vibrant in colour, making them a stunning addition to any aquarium. Neon Tetras are also not difficult to keep, making them a good choice for beginners trying to expand on their fish-keeping experience.
Key information: Neon Tetras will live peacefully amongst other fish in a community tank setup, although should be kept in a group of 6 minimum due to being a schooling species. Neon Tetras can also be timid, so keeping with large or aggressive species should be avoided. Gender ratios are not overly important. Sexing Neon Tetras can be more difficult than with other fish, but generally, the female will be larger, more rounded, and the body stripe can appear curved in comparison to the male. The ideal water temperature should be between 21-27˚ C. Neon Tetras are not fussy eaters and will eat most food provided, including flakes, granules, live, and frozen foods. Adult Neon Tetras can reach up to 4cm in size and can live between 5-10 years!
