Native to South American freshwater systems, Dwarf Cichlids are one of the most striking freshwater fish available with their array of glowing colours and outgoing personalities. Although one of the easiest Cichlids to care for, Dwarf Cichlids are less hardy than other species and have specific requirements to meet their needs, making them less favourable for beginner aquarists just starting out. Some knowledge and previous fish-keeping experience is recommended.
Key information: Dwarf Cichlids can be territorial during breeding season, or if the tank is too small, however they are often relatively peaceful and will live happily in a community tank with similar-sized fish. If keeping multiple Dwarf Cichlids, they should be kept in pairs of 1 male to 1 female. Dwarf Cichlids are known to pair for life and will establish their own territories within the tank, so lots of hiding spaces and line-of-sight blocking is recommended. Sexing Dwarf Cichlids depends on the type but there are often differences in colour, size, and fin shape. Dwarf Cichlids require higher temperatures than most, with an ideal range of 27-30°C. Dwarf Cichlids can sometimes be fussy eaters but will often eat most dry foods and should also be offered frozen or live foods, such as bloodworms. Dwarf Cichlids are sensitive and do require more maintenance than other fish: they should have partial water changes at least one a week to combat a build-up of ammonia and other toxins. They also do better in softer waters, which can be achieved through the addition of Indian Almond Leaves or Driftwood. Adult Dwarf Cichlids reach an average size of 8cm and, if given high-quality foods and well-regulated waters, can live up to 4 years.
