The Gourami fish are native to slow-moving waters, such as rivers, swamps, and canals, in Eastern and Southern Asia, specifically in areas such as Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, the Malaysian Archipelago, China, Korea and Japan. Dwarf Gouramis come in a vast array of colours and patterns, making them a beautiful addition to any tank. Dwarf Gouramis are also relatively easy to care for.
Key information: Dwarf Gouramis can live in community tank setups, providing they are not placed with active or fin-nipping fish. Dwarf Gouramis are slow-moving, so tankmates should be of a similar size and nature, such as peaceful barbs, danios, and tetras. Although generally compatible with other fish, male Gouramis can sometimes be aggressive towards each other so should be kept singly. However, female Gouramis are accepting of each other and can usually live together without concern. Sexing Gouramis is not too difficult. Not only are the females plumper than males, but the females dorsal fin will also be both shorter and rounder. Male Gouramis will have a longer, pointed dorsal fin in comparison. Gouramis have an ability to breathe air and are surface oriented, so their tank should contain tall or floating plants. Gouramis are also capable of jumping out of the tank, so a tight fitting lid is recommended. The ideal water temperature is between 23-28C. Gouramis are generally not fussy eaters and will accept most foods provided, however should also be offered live or frozen foods such as Bloodworms to maximise colour and longevity. Adult Dwarf Gouramis can reach up to 7cm in length and, if well-cared for, will live from 2-6 years.
