Molly fish can be found in freshwater, brackish, and saltwater habitats all the way from the Southern United States to Columbia and Mexico. Mollies are a great addition to any aquarium due to the many different colours and varieties available. Similar to Swordtails, they are also hardy, easy to care for fish, ideal for beginners starting their journey into fish-keeping.
Key information: Mollies will live happily in a community tank setup, although too many males can result in a dominance hierarchy and territorial aggression (we recommend 2 to 3 females per male!). The ideal water temperature should be between 22-28˚C. The most obvious way to sex Mollies is to look at the anal fin. Females will have an open, triangular anal fin, whilst males have a more rod looking anal fin (this is known as a gonopodium, used for breeding!) Mollies are generally not fussy eaters and will consume almost any food provided, although are omnivorous so should be offered algae wafers too. Adult Mollies can reach up to 13cm in length and live on up to 3-5 years on average.
