Originating predominantly from the Amazon River in South America, Corydoras are a beautiful and popular addition to any aquarium with their peaceful nature and lively personalities. Corydoras are also hardy, easy to care for fish, making them an ideal candidate for beginners in the fish-keeping hobby.
Key information: Corydoras will generally live happily in a community tank setup, provided they are paired with other small- to medium-sized peaceful fish. They are also a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 for maximum health and longevity. Whilst a gender ratio of 2 males to 1 female is recommended, 1 male to 1 female is not usually a problem unless you are attempting to breed. Sexing Corydoras can also be quite difficult - usually the only difference is that females tend to be larger, rounder, and broader than their male partners. Corydoras are bottom dwellers and will generally help to keep your tank clean. They are also not fussy eaters - Corydoras will spend most of their time rummaging around the tank looking for scraps! However, they should be also offered sinking foods regularly, such as algae wafers and shrimp pellets. The ideal water temperature should be between 22-29˚C. Adult Corydora size can range from 2.5-12cm depending on species, but most will be less than 7cm. The average lifespan is between 5-10 years, although some can live significantly longer if provided quality food, water, and care.
