Freshwater Angelfish typically originate from the South American Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin and rivers in the Guiana Shield. Interactive and elegant, Angelfish are hardy and easy to care for, providing you have a large enough tank to accommodate their impressive fin size.
Key information: Angelfish are generally peaceful and will do well in community setups, but they can show some signs of territorial aggression during breeding season, so the recommended gender ratio is 2 females to 1 male. Angelfish can also show aggression to others of their own kind, so it is recommended to keep them in small groups only. Consideration should be given to smaller tankmates, as it is not uncommon for fish such as small Tetras to become an inviting snack. Sexing Angelfish can be difficult, especially when young, however males are usually bigger and will have a high crown on the front of their head. Although both sexes have a tube protruding from their bellies once matured, males will tend to have a pointed, narrow tube, whilst females will have a rounded, cylindrical tube. The ideal water temperature should be between 23-29˚C. Angelfish are not fussy eaters and will consume almost any food provided. Angelfish prefer tanks that are taller rather than longer, given their extravagant size and shape - Angelfish can reach anything from 15-18cm head to tail and 20-33cm from top fin to bottom fin! If well-cared for, these stunning fish can live up to 8-12 years in total.
