Originating from Northeast South American coastal streams, Guppies are a beautiful addition to any aquarium with their vibrant colours and peaceful nature. They are also hardy, easy to care for fish and are ideal for beginners starting their journey into fish-keeping.
Key information: Guppies will live happily in a community tank setup, although tank mates should be other small and peaceful species, as the Guppies small size and vibrant colours can encourage fin-nipping from others. Whilst male Guppies are peaceful, a good mix of male and female Guppies is recommended due to females becoming territorial in smaller groups. Sexing Guppies is not too difficult - typically, female Guppies with be larger, rounder, lack colour on the body, and have a short dorsal fin. Females will also have an open, triangular anal fin, whilst males have a more rod looking anal fin (this is known as a gonopodium, used for breeding!) Guppies are versatile, so the ideal water temperature can be anywhere between 16-28˚C. Guppies are generally not fussy eaters and will consume almost any food provided. Adult Guppies can reach up to 5cm in length and, if cared for properly, can live anywhere from 2-5 years.
