These adorable little Pufferfish, commonly known as Dwarf Puffers or Pea Puffers, originate from freshwater river systems in the Southwest Indian region. They are one of less than 30 known Pufferfish species that live and thrive in freshwater! Dwarf Puffers are inquisitive, fascinating to watch, and one of the only fish that can move their eyes independent of each other. These Puffers' teeth do not grow like other Puffers so they do not need to consume snails on a regular basis, although they do find them to be a tasty treat. It also brings out their natural hunting techniques, which can be fun to see!
Key information: Dwarf Puffers should be kept in groups of no less than 6 and prefer warmer temperatures of around 24-28˚C. Although not as easy to sex as some other fish, males can usually be distinguished by a black line running along their underside and silvery wrinkles around the eyes. Whilst not incredibly difficult to keep, we do recommend a species only tank due to territorial aggression and fin-nipping. Dwarf Puffers can be fussy eaters and should be offered live and frozen foods, such as snails, bloodworms, blackworms, and brine shrimp. Most if not all will turn their nose up at flakes and pellets. Adult Dwarf Puffers reach a maximum size of 3cm and can live between 3-6 years (although some of the oldest pea puffers have reached 12 years!)
